We all desire for longevity, and long healthy life doesn’t come easy. It takes good DNA and healthy lifestyle to lead a life last longer than 100 years. Intrigued by the longevity of some people living in a certain way, led Dan Buettner in a journey – to study people living in the blue zones (Known as longevity hotspots, then).
Buettner was born on July 1960 in St. Paul, Minnesota. In 1995, when he was an expedition of his newly founded company Earthtreks, he noticed adults’ participation in the expedition which made him realize the factor of longevity. He took this idea about initiating research on longevity to National Geographic. Sooner, he started studying and got access to previous research data and statistics from the National Institute on Aging. He got to know that there are previous discoveries of Longevity hotspot at Sardinia, Okinawa, and Loma Linda.
In 2003, he met researchers who worked with him along his journey and start his research from exploring Sardinia, Okinawa, Monterrey, Loma Linda, Nuevo Leon. In the same year, while exploration and discussing with anthropologists, dietitians, geneticists, historians, and geneticists, he formed Blue Zones LLC.
From then, his research on longevity grew exponentially. In 2005, secrets of long life, a cover story was published in National Geographic magazine. In 2006, he met Dr. Luis Rosero, Costa Rican demographer, and discovered one more blue zone region, Nicoya Peninsula. In 2008, he found another at Greek Island, Ikaria, with the help of Dr. Luis. Discovering two new Longevity hotspots or Blue Zones within two years, led him to spread his knowledge to the world.
He published a book: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the longest, under national geographic, and it became the New York Times Bestseller. In 2009, he spoke on TED on How to live to be 100. Another book – Thrive: finding happiness the blue zones way, was published in 2010. It was about research on happiest regions on this planet; it includes how social and physical environment matters in the state of happiness. The Blue Zones Solution: Eating and Living Like the World’s Healthiest People, was published in 2015, another book of secrets of longevity. Now, he is applying his theoretical knowledge in the smaller communities and groups showing phenomenal results.
